From lawyer to leader
Gandhi trained as a lawyer in London before spending more than twenty years in South Africa, where he first developed and practiced satyagraha — his philosophy of nonviolent resistance — while fighting discriminatory laws against the Indian community there.
Leading India's independence movement
Returning to India in 1915, Gandhi became the leading figure in the movement for independence from British rule, organizing large-scale nonviolent campaigns including the 240-mile Salt March of 1930. India gained independence in 1947, the year before his death.
Forgiveness as strength
"The weak can never forgive; forgiveness is the attribute of the strong" is one of Gandhi's most quoted teachings — the idea that letting go of a grudge takes more strength than holding onto one. He was assassinated in New Delhi on January 30, 1948, at age 78.
